Leland Coates was born in Mt Pleasant, Utah and raised in Mt Pleasant and Mountainville.
His father was Alvin Coates and his mother was Melba Tidwell Coates.
He took art classes in high school from Max Blaine and learned to water color from him.
Married Utahna Coates and lived in Salt Lake County and had four children, Jeri (Bryan) Thomson, Blake (Karen) Coates, Sam Coates and John (Jennifer) Coates.
He was a home builder and developer.
When he retired he moved back to Mountainville and married Sharon Garrett Coates.
He likes to farm, garden, water color, square dance call, sing and play the guitar.
