The Fairview Museum of History and Art is proud to present A Legacy of Giving, an exhibition showcasing the profound contributions of artists J.H. Stansfield and Max Blain. This special exhibition opens on October 18th at 7:00 PM and features works that embody a deep appreciation for the land, a commitment to family, and enduring service to the community.

The artistry of both Stansfield and Blain reflects a legacy that continues to thrive within the community. Jennifer Stavros, an artist and the great-granddaughter of Max Blain, will share personal insights during the exhibition’s opening night reception, highlighting the connections that bind generations through art and education.

J.H. Stansfield (1878-1953) was a self-taught painter whose early experiences as a sheep herder in central Utah inspired his unique vision of light and landscape. Though he never pursued formal education beyond his hometown, Stansfield’s work is characterized by its personal and mysterious portrayal of reality. His dual roles as a community leader and an educator at Snow College allowed him to impart his passion for art to countless students, including Max Blain.

Max Blain (1906–1994) followed in Stansfield’s footsteps, studying under him and becoming a respected landscape painter known for his realistic depictions of the western terrain. Blain's career as an art supervisor and educator, which included 40 years of teaching in the North Sanpete School District, further solidified his commitment to nurturing future generations of artists.

The exhibition A Legacy of Giving serves as a testament to the enduring impact of these artists and many others who have called Sanpete home, expressing their love for the land and enriching their families and the broader community. It celebrates the artistic lineage that has fostered creativity and a dedication to education over the decades.

Join us on October 18th to explore the works of these influential artists and hear from their descendants about the legacy of love and service that continues to thrive.
